According to the National Strength and Conditioning association

“high maximal aerobic power (VO2max) is necessary for success in aerobic endurance events. A high correlation has been shown to exist between VO2 max and performance in aerobic endurance events. Consequently, aerobic endurance training programs should be designed to improve VO2 max.   However, although a high VO2 max is important for successful performance, other factors may be equally or even more important. These factors include a high lactate threshold, good exercise economy, a high ability to use fat as a fuel source, and a high percentage of Type 1 muscle fibers” Essentials of Strength and Conditioning, 3rd Edition, p.490

“The most accurate methods for regulation exercise intensity are to monitor oxygen consumption during exercise to determine its percentage of VO2 max or to periodically measure the blood lactate concentration to determine the relationship to the lactate threshold.” Essentials of Strength and Conditioning, 3rd Edition, p.493

“Without some knowledge of an athlete’s lactate threshold, a highly effective aerobic endurance training program cannot be developed.” Essentials of Strength and Conditioning, 3rd Edition, P.493
