According to the National Strength and Conditioning association
“high maximal aerobic power (VO2max) is necessary for success in aerobic endurance events. A high correlation has been shown to exist between VO2 max and performance in aerobic endurance events. Consequently, aerobic endurance training programs should be designed to improve VO2 max. However, although a high VO2 max is important for successful performance, other factors may be equally or even more important.
